Twelve miles north of Thermopolis and two miles west of Kirby is the ghost town of Gebo. It used to be a coal mining town with a population of over 2,000.
On the day we were exploring this site, I met a gentleman from New York who said that his last name was Gebo. "An americanized spelling of the French name, Gibault," he said. He informed me that a Samuel Gebo had three coal mines at one time—one in Canada, one in South America, and this one.
